In short: For over half a century, the 'away goals' rule dictated the drama of European football. In 2021, that era officially ended, fundamentally altering how clubs approach high-stakes ties and shifting the balance of power in the world's most prestigious tournament.

On June 24, 2021, UEFA approved a landmark proposal to abolish the away goals rule across all club competitions. This change ended a tradition that had been in place since 1965. Under the old system, if two teams were tied on aggregate goals after extra time, the team with more goals scored at their opponent's stadium was declared the winner. The new regulation ensures that if scores remain level after extra time, the match proceeds directly to a penalty shoot-out.

The 2021–22 season served as a pivotal transition for this rule in the UEFA Champions League—the tournament's 67th edition and its 30th year under its current branding. This season also marked the first time since 1999–2000 that three major European club competitions were organized by UEFA simultaneously: the Champions League, the Europa League, and the newly established Europa Conference League.

The tournament's logistics were heavily impacted by global disruptions. The final was originally slated for Munich but moved to Saint Petersburg before being relocated again to the Stade de France in Saint-Denis due to the war in Ukraine. Despite these shifts, Real Madrid secured their 14th European Cup title, defeating Liverpool 1–0. This victory allowed them to sweep additional honors, including the 2022 UEFA Super Cup and the 2022 FIFA Club World Cup.

The season also introduced a complex redistribution of spots based on association coefficients calculated from 2015–20. For instance, while top associations received four teams each, others were allocated between one and three slots. This structural evolution, combined with the removal of away goals, represents a modernization of European football's competitive framework.
