In short: The 2020 Texas Senate race was projected to be a predictable Republican victory. Yet, the results revealed a complex landscape: while incumbent John Cornyn faced his lowest percentage win to date, he simultaneously achieved a historic milestone in total votes cast, outperforming the presidential candidate in the state.

Held on November 3, 2020, the election saw Republican incumbent John Cornyn secure a fourth term. While most news organizations had projected the race as "Lean Republican," the final outcome showed a shifting demographic landscape. Cornyn won with a 9.6% margin over Democratic nominee MJ Hegar, who secured 43.9% of the vote—the highest share achieved by any of Cornyn's Democratic challengers.

Despite the narrowing margin, the election produced a historic statistical anomaly. Cornyn received more raw votes than any Republican U.S. Senate candidate in United States history at that time, a record that stood until Steve Garvey surpassed it in California in 2024. This surge was driven by Cornyn more than doubling his 2014 vote count.

The results highlighted significant regional nuances. Cornyn outperformed President Donald Trump in Texas by approximately 4%, notably carrying Tarrant and Williamson counties, both of which were won by Joe Biden. While Cornyn also performed better than Trump in the Texas Triangle, Hegar showed strength in the Rio Grande Valley, slightly outperforming Biden there and winning Zapata County, even though she vastly underperformed previous Democratic margins in that region.

This race lacked the intensity seen during the 2018 Texas Senate election, an event where Democrat Beto O'Rourke lost to Republican Ted Cruz by 2.6%. Ultimately, Cornyn's victory was secured by winning 24 of the state's 36 congressional districts, including one district that elected a Democrat.
