How the 2023 MLB season fundamentally reshaped the pace and structure of baseball
In short: The 2023 Major League Baseball season marked a radical departure from tradition, introducing a pitch clock, restricted defensive shifts, and larger bases to accelerate the game. Beyond these mechanical shifts, the league adopted a balanced schedule, ensuring every team faced every other club, mirroring the structures of the NBA and NHL.
The 2023 season, which ran from March 30 to November 1, was defined by a deliberate effort to increase the pace of play. The most significant innovation was the pitch clock, mandating 15 seconds between pitches with empty bases and 20 seconds with runners on. Pitchers were required to initiate their motion before the clock expired, while batters had to be alert in the box with at least eight seconds remaining. Violations resulted in automatic balls or strikes, a rule that necessitated mid-season clarifications to prevent players like Max Scherzer or Willson Contreras from exploiting the system to manipulate timing.
Defensive strategy also underwent a forced evolution. Teams were required to keep at least four players in the infield, with two on each side of second base, and all infielders had to remain within the infield's outer edge until the pitch was released. Additionally, the physical dimensions of the game changed as all three bases were increased from 15 to 18 inches. These changes were complemented by a new balanced schedule, where each of the 30 teams played every other team at least once, moving away from the previous division-heavy format.
The season also saw adjustments to the use of position players as pitchers. New rules restricted their usage to the ninth inning with a lead of at least 10 runs, or at any time if a team trailed by eight or more runs. Despite these structural changes, the season maintained its global reach through the MLB World Tour, with series held in Mexico City and London. The campaign concluded with the Texas Rangers securing their first franchise title by defeating the Arizona Diamondbacks in five games during the World Series.
