The 2024 IndyCar season redefined dominance and introduced a new era of hybrid power
In short: The 113th season of American open-wheel racing saw Álex Palou cement his legacy as a back-to-back champion. Amidst a flurry of mid-season driver shuffles and the long-awaited debut of hybrid engine technology, the series navigated significant safety upgrades and a pivotal shift in its broadcast future for 2025.
The 2024 NTT IndyCar Series marked a historic milestone for Álex Palou, who secured his third career championship. By defending his 2023 title, Palou became the first driver to achieve back-to-back championships in the Dallara DW12 chassis era, a feat not seen since Dario Franchitti in 2011. The season was defined by technical evolution, most notably the implementation of hybrid technology. While original plans for a 2.4-liter hybrid formula were pushed to 2027, the series successfully integrated hybrid components into its existing 2.2-liter engines, with the debut occurring at Mid-Ohio on May 14, 2024.
Safety remained a primary focus following incidents in 2023. To prevent wheel assemblies from detaching during high-speed collisions, the series mandated stronger rear suspension uprights for all oval events. Additionally, race restart procedures were overhauled with the introduction of a specific 'restart line.' Drivers were prohibited from attempting overtakes until they crossed this line, a rule designed to curb the high frequency of early-restart incidents observed in the previous season.
The driver lineup experienced unprecedented volatility throughout the year. Teams like Arrow McLaren and Dale Coyne Racing frequently rotated personnel due to injuries, contractual disputes, and performance shifts. Notably, the Indianapolis 500 saw Josef Newgarden secure his second consecutive victory, joining Hélio Castroneves as the only drivers to repeat the feat since 2002. As the series concludes its final year under the NBC Sports contract, the landscape of IndyCar continues to evolve, with television coverage set to transition to Fox in 2025.
