In short: The 2022 FIA World Rally Championship marked a historic turning point. By introducing Rally1 regulations, the sport embraced hybrid drivetrains and standardised safety structures. These changes fundamentally altered how high-performance machines compete across thirteen intense rounds, spanning Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Asia as the series celebrated its fiftieth season.

The 2022 season was the 50th in the history of the FIA World Rally Championship. It introduced the Rally1 technical regulations, which brought two major shifts to the sport: the introduction of hybrid drivetrains and a greater emphasis on standardized parts to improve accessibility. These hybrid systems featured an e-motor producing 100 kW (134.1 hp) paired with a 1.6-litre, direct-injection turbo inline-4 engine. To manage costs, the hybrid software and hardware were standardized for the first three years of the Rally1 life-cycle.

The competitive landscape saw significant shifts in personnel and machinery. Kalle Rovanperä and co-driver Jonne Halttunen secured their first titles after winning the 2022 Rally New Zealand, with Rovanperä becoming the youngest ever World Rally Champion at age twenty-two. Meanwhile, Toyota Gazoo Racing WRT successfully defended their manufacturers' title, finishing with a seventy-point lead over Hyundai Shell Mobis WRT after the 2022 Rally Catalunya.

The season was also defined by logistical adaptations. Due to a lack of snow, the Rally Sweden headquarters relocated from Torsby to Umeå for the first time in WRC history. Additionally, the Rally New Zealand returned to the calendar for the first time since 2012, while Rally Japan occupied the final spot in a thirteen-round schedule spanning Europe, Africa, Oceania, and Asia. These shifts highlighted the evolving nature of the championship as it navigated post-pandemic returns and environmental challenges.
