A Nebraska Senate race defied tradition as an independent challenger nearly unseated an incumbent
In short: In a state typically considered a safe Republican stronghold, the 2024 Senate election became unexpectedly competitive. Incumbent Deb Fischer secured a third term, but her margin of victory marked her weakest performance since 1970. Meanwhile, independent candidate Dan Osborn achieved the strongest showing for a non-party challenger in Nebraska history.
The 2024 contest was notable for being the first time since 1954 that both of Nebraska's Senate seats were on the ballot simultaneously, due to a special election for the state's other seat. Deb Fischer, who has served in the Senate since 2013, faced a unique challenge from Dan Osborn, a mechanic and former union leader. While Nebraska is reliably Republican, the race drew significant attention as a potential factor in determining the overall partisan control of the Senate.
Osborn's campaign was marked by his refusal to align with any political party, even rejecting an initial plan by the Nebraska Democratic Party to endorse him. This independence extended to his interactions with the Legal Marijuana NOW Party. A complex series of events unfolded during that party's primary, involving candidate Kerry Eddy, who openly supported Osborn. Following internal disputes and legal threats regarding the party's ballot access, the Legal Marijuana NOW Party ultimately failed to field a candidate, leaving the field to the primary contenders.
Despite losing the election, Osborn's performance was historically significant. He outperformed any challenger in a Republican-held seat during the 2024 cycle and surpassed the 1936 independent victory of George W. Norris. Osborn successfully won four counties, including two that voted for Donald Trump and two that voted for Kamala Harris in the presidential race. Fischer maintained her hold on the remaining 89 counties. Osborn also managed to win two of the state's three congressional districts, even though those districts ultimately elected Republicans to the House.
