A double disqualification shakes up the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix podium results
In short: Lando Norris secured pole position at the 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix, but a post-race technical inspection led to the disqualification of both McLaren drivers. This unexpected ruling promoted Mercedes teammates George Russell and Kimi Antonelli to the podium, significantly altering the championship landscape after Max Verstappen claimed victory.
The 2025 Las Vegas Grand Prix, held on November 22, marked the twenty-second round of the Formula One World Championship. The event, hosted at the Las Vegas Strip Circuit in Paradise, Nevada, saw Max Verstappen secure his second win in Las Vegas and his sixty-ninth career victory. While Lando Norris initially crossed the finish line in second place, both he and his teammate Oscar Piastri were disqualified following post-race inspections that revealed excessive plank wear on the bottom of their cars.
This technical violation had immediate consequences for the race classification. George Russell, who finished third on the track, was promoted to second, while rookie Kimi Antonelli moved up to third place. Antonelli’s podium finish was particularly notable given that he started the race from seventeenth position and had served a five-second penalty for a false start. The race itself featured several incidents, including a collision between Gabriel Bortoleto and Lance Stroll that resulted in a grid penalty for Bortoleto, and a virtual safety car period caused by damage to Liam Lawson’s vehicle on the second lap.
Despite the disqualification, McLaren maintained its lead in the Constructors' Championship with 756 points. However, the results tightened the competition significantly. Max Verstappen’s win brought him level on points with Oscar Piastri, while Mercedes reduced the gap to McLaren to 325 points. In the Drivers' Championship, Lando Norris retained his lead, holding a 24-point advantage over his teammate Piastri. The weekend also marked a milestone for both Lando Norris and George Russell, as they each reached their 150th Formula One entry.
