A record-breaking winter of expansion in Harbin
In short: The 2025 Asian Winter Games in Harbin did more than just showcase elite athleticism; they shattered previous participation records. With new nations making their debut and a surge in medal-winning diversity, the ninth edition of this multi-sport event redefined the competitive landscape of Asian winter sports.
Held from 7 to 14 February 2025 in Harbin, China, the ninth Asian Winter Games saw a significant expansion in scale. The event hosted 1,275 athletes representing 34 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), surpassing the previous record of 32 NOCs set at the Sapporo games in Japan. The competition also saw the arrival of Bhutan, Cambodia, and Saudi Arabia, marking their first appearance at the games. While the program saw the introduction of ski mountaineering, it also saw the removal of ski jumping from the 64 scheduled events across 11 sports.
The medal distribution reflected a period of unprecedented diversity. While the host nation, China, dominated the standings with 32 gold and 8 and 85 total medals, the breadth of winners reached new heights. Nine different NOCs secured at least one medal, breaking the previous record of eight held by the 2011 games. Notably, six different NOCs achieved gold medal status. A landmark achievement occurred for the Philippines when the men's curling squad—featuring Marc Pfister, Enrico Pfister, Christian Haller, Alan Frei, and Benjo Delarmente—claimed the country's inaugural Asian Winter Games gold medal.
Individual excellence was also marked by remarkable consistency. In speed skating, China's Han Mei earned the most total medals for an individual, accumulating five medals in total. She shared the record for most golds won by a single athlete with South Korea's Choi Min-jeong and two other Chinese skaters, Gao Tingyu and Ning Zhongyan, who each won three golds. China's dominance was further evidenced by eleven podium sweeps across various disciplines, including cross-country skiing and ski mountaineering, while South Korea achieved a sweep in the women's 500 metres short-track speed skating.
