In short: The 111th edition of American soccer's oldest knockout competition faces a unique challenge. With the United States hosting the World Cup, the 2026 U.S. Open Cup has been condensed, featuring 80 teams and a revised format that reshapes how professional and amateur clubs compete for the historic trophy.

The 2026 U.S. Open Cup, organized by the United States Soccer Federation, represents a significant departure from previous years. To accommodate the summer World Cup, organizers reduced the tournament size, effectively eliminating one round of play. The competition, which began on March 17 and concludes with the final on October 21, features 80 teams. This includes 48 clubs from the three professional tiers of the American soccer league system and 32 teams from the Open Division.

Eligibility rules were tightened for the 2026 tournament. Participation was restricted to teams that played a league season in 2025, and the National League qualifying track was removed. Major League Soccer teams were only eligible if they did not qualify for the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup or the 2026 Leagues Cup. Consequently, defending champions Nashville SC were unable to participate. The tournament structure also introduced eight geographical groups named after legendary U.S. national team players, such as Landon Donovan and Clint Dempsey, to organize the initial stages.

Financial incentives remain a core component of the competition. The winner of the 2026 U.S. Open Cup receives $600,000, while the runner-up earns $250,000. Additionally, teams that advance the furthest from their respective divisions are awarded a $50,000 bonus. Beyond the prize money, the ultimate reward for the champion is a coveted spot in the 2027 CONCACAF Champions Cup. Despite the logistical constraints of the year, the tournament maintains a broad reach, with clubs representing 34 states and the District of Columbia, including eight teams making their tournament debuts.
