In short: Since 1913, the U.S. Open Cup has survived pandemics and league shifts. But a recent dispute between Major League Soccer and U.S. Soccer over which teams actually compete has threatened the stability of the nation's oldest ongoing soccer tournament.

The tournament, originally known as the National Challenge Cup, began in the 1913–1914 season with the Brooklyn Field Club taking the first trophy. For decades, it served as the primary national knockout competition, though its reach was often limited by the immense travel difficulties of the early 20th century. In 1999, the United States Soccer Federation renamed the competition the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup to honor the influential executive.

While the tournament is famous for the dominance of Major League Soccer (MLS) since 1996, it is built on a single-elimination format that theoretically allows for massive upsets. The Rochester Rhinos achieved this in 1999, becoming the last lower-division team to win the title. However, the competition's structure has faced significant recent upheaval. In late 2023, MLS announced an intention to send its MLS Next Pro reserve teams to the 2024 edition instead of senior squads, a move U.S. Soccer officially denied.

The tournament's landscape is also shaped by strict eligibility rules. Since 2016, clubs owned by higher-division professional teams—primarily MLS-owned USL sides—are barred from competing to prevent player manipulation. This ensures that while professional giants like Nashville SC, the 2025 champions, enter later rounds, the early stages remain a battleground for amateur and lower-league clubs. Looking ahead, a full return of all MLS first teams is scheduled for 2027, promising a return to the tournament's traditional scale.
