Brandon McNulty Claims Victory in the 93rd UCI Road World Championships Men's Road Race
In short: In a display of tactical brilliance, American cyclist Brandon McNulty secured the rainbow jersey in Montreal. By launching a decisive move with 30 kilometres left to race, he held off a chasing pack of elite riders to win the 93rd edition of this prestigious event, marking a career-defining moment in Canadian cycling history.
The 2026 UCI Road World Championships took place on 27 September 2026, centered in Montreal, Canada. The event saw a notable absence as the 2025 champion, Tadej Pogačar of Slovenia, was forced to withdraw from defending his title due to injuries he suffered during the 2026 Vuelta a España. In his stead, the field of world-class competitors faced a grueling route that tested both endurance and climbing prowess.
Spanning a total distance of 273.4 kilometres, the course featured a challenging 3,803 metres of elevation gain. The race began at Quartier DIX30 in Brossard, winding through various towns in the Montérégie area. Riders then traversed the Samuel De Champlain Bridge to enter the downtown Montreal finishing circuit. This 13.4-kilometre loop around Mount Royal was completed 12 times, echoing the historical routes used for the 1974 World Championships and the 1976 Summer Olympics.
The circuit was defined by punishing climbs, including the Voie Camillien-Houde, which averaged a 6.2% gradient over 2.3 kilometres, and the steep Chemin de la Polytechnique, where sections surpassed an 11% incline. A false flat along Avenue du Parc served as the final stretch. McNulty’s winning move occurred with roughly 30 kilometres remaining, allowing him to cross the finish line 13 seconds ahead of his closest rivals, Michael Matthews of Australia and Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands.
