Labor disputes and new arrivals define the sixteenth season of the USL Championship
In short: As the USL Championship enters its sixteenth year, the league faces significant internal friction. A player strike looms over the 2026 season due to stalled labor negotiations between the league and its players' union. Meanwhile, the competitive landscape shifts with new team debuts and the departure of a long-standing club.
The 2026 campaign marks the ninth year of the league operating under Division II sanctioning. This season features twenty-five clubs divided into two conferences, navigating a thirty-game regular season schedule. The format requires teams to play every conference opponent twice, both at home and away, while facing five or six teams from the opposing conference. At the conclusion of the regular season, the top eight teams from each conference will advance to the playoffs.
The league's roster of teams has undergone notable changes. Brooklyn FC, originally slated for a 2025 start, officially joined the competition in 2026 alongside Sporting Club Jacksonville. Conversely, North Carolina FC exited the league following the 2025 season to enter a period of hiatus, with the organization aiming to join the USL Premier in 2028 once a new stadium in Raleigh is completed. These transitions occur as the Pittsburgh Riverhounds defend their title as league champions, and Louisville City FC holds the Players' Shield.
Beyond the standard league play, all twenty-five USL Championship teams are set to compete in the Prinx Tires USL Cup. This tournament also includes eighteen teams from USL League One, adding four matches to each club's total schedule. However, the backdrop for these matches remains uncertain. The United Soccer League Players Association has authorized a strike, leaving the season's progression contingent on the successful resolution of ongoing labor talks between the players and the league office.
