The last Ottoman Caliph was a painter who spent his final years in Paris
In short: Elected by the Turkish Grand National Assembly in 1922, Abdülmecid II was the final Caliph of the Muslims. A talented artist and musician, he lived a life defined by the collapse of an empire, political exile, and a long, lonely struggle to be buried in his homeland.
Born in 1868 at the Dolmabahçe Palace, Abdülmecid II was a man of diverse interests, ranging from athletics and hunting to painting and chamber music. Unlike his predecessors, he held the title of Caliph of the Muslims rather than Commander of the Faithful. His tenure was marked by intense political tension; while he sympathized with the Turkish Nationalist Movement, he was eventually caught in a power struggle with Mustafa Kemal Pasha. Following the abolition of the Ottoman Caliphate in 1924, he was forced into immediate exile, leaving Turkey by train for Switzerland.
His life in Europe was marked by financial hardship and political isolation. He settled in Nice, France, before moving to Paris, where he spent his later years focusing on worship, painting, and collecting butterflies. Despite his efforts to maintain his status as the head of the Osmanoğlu family, he was largely ignored by the international community. His relationship with his cousin, the former Sultan Mehmed VI, remained strained, with the two feuding over family property and the right to use the title of Caliph until Mehmed's death in 1926.
Abdülmecid II died of a heart attack in Paris in 1944, the same day the city was liberated from German occupation. The Turkish government refused to allow his burial in Turkey, a prohibition that persisted for years. His remains were held at the Grand Mosque of Paris for a decade before finally being transported to Medina, where he was laid to rest in Jannat al-Baqi. His daughter, Dürrüşehvar Sultan, remained deeply resentful of the Republic's refusal to allow her father a final resting place on Turkish soil.
