The ultimate game boss becomes a player seeking redemption
In short: What happens when you stop playing the villain and start living their life? In this Japanese light novel series, a top-tier MMO player is transported into the body of his own avatar—the world's most feared antagonist—two centuries after her defeat. He must now navigate a legacy of infamy to save a crumbling world.
The narrative centers on Lufas Maphaahl, the 'unofficial last boss' of the MMORPG Exgate Online. In the game’s meta-narrative, she was so dominant that other players could not enjoy the experience until she was intentionally defeated in a final battle. Following this defeat, a player received an in-game prompt from the Goddess of Creation offering a 'new role.' He accepted, only to find himself physically inhabiting Lufas's body 200 years into the game's history.
The protagonist faces a complex moral and logistical crisis: he must manage the reputation of the 'Black-Winged Conqueror' while dealing with her former subordinates, the Twelve Heavenly Stars. These entities—ranging from a rainbow sheep in human form to robotic maids and demonic goats—have gone on various rampages following Lufas's original death. Some seek vengeance, while others have simply drifted into isolation or opened businesses like restaurants.
The story introduces deep layers of irony regarding the game's 'heroes.' Several of the Seven Heroes who originally defeated Lufas are still alive due to their long lifespans but suffer from profound depression; some believe defeating her was a mistake, while others feel they were inferior rulers compared to her. Meanwhile, the true antagonist is revealed to be the Goddess of Creation herself, who engineered the world's constant struggle as a divine game.
Originally serialized on Shōsetsuka ni Narō starting in October 2015, the series has expanded into a multi-media franchise including a manga and an anime adaptation. The narrative explores themes of identity, legacy, and the consequences of 'winning' at any cost within a simulated reality.
