How a single hat-trick changed the course of European football history
In short: In May 2024, Ademola Lookman achieved something not seen in a one-legged Men's European final since 1969. By scoring three goals for Atalanta against Bayer Leverkusen, he did more than just win a trophy; he ended a massive unbeaten streak and propelled himself toward continental stardom.
Ademola Lookman's ascent from the Charlton Athletic academy to the heights of European football is a testament to his versatile attacking skill. A winger and second striker capable of finishing with both feet and his head, Lookman has become a decisive force on the pitch. His breakthrough on the grandest stage came during the 2024 UEFA Europa League final at the Dublin Arena, where his hat-trick secured a 3–0 victory for Atalanta over Bayer Leverkusen, ending the German side's 51-game unbeaten run.
This performance earned Lookman the title of African Footballer of the Year, making him the seventh Nigerian international to receive the honor. His impact was so significant that he received a Ballon d'Or nomination in September 2024, becoming the first current Atalanta player to be nominated. This recognition followed his success with the Nigerian national team, where he helped lead the squad to a runner-up finish in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and a third-place finish in 2025.
Lookman's international journey was marked by a complex decision regarding his heritage. Born in Wandsworth to Nigerian parents of Yoruba origin, he represented England at the U19, U20, and U21 levels, even winning the 2017 FIFA U-20 World Cup with the England squad. However, after multiple approaches from Nigeria, he officially switched his allegiance to the Nigerian national team in early 2022, making his debut against Ghana in March of that year.
