In short: Long considered among the earliest inhabitants of the Philippines, the Aeta people possess a unique genetic legacy. Recent research reveals they hold the world's highest concentration of Denisovan ancestry, a testament to their deep-time origins that predate the arrival of Austronesian migrants by tens of thousands of years.

The Aeta, along with other indigenous groups like the Agta and Dumagat, belong to the Negrito population cluster of Southeast Asia. Genetic evidence suggests these groups diverged from a common East-Eurasian meta-population around 40,000 years ago. Their history is marked by multiple migration waves through ancient land bridges during the Paleolithic era, followed by the arrival of Austronesian peoples from Taiwan approximately 7,000 years ago. Today, the Aeta exhibit a complex genetic profile, featuring significant Austronesian admixture alongside their ancient, distinct lineage.

A landmark 2021 study highlighted the Ayta Magbukon group as possessing between 3% and 9% Denisovan ancestry—a figure significantly higher than that found in other populations. This suggests that distinct, archaic Islander Denisovan groups once existed in the Philippines and interbred with modern humans. Despite this deep history, the Aeta have faced centuries of displacement, from colonial-era enslavement to modern land dispossession caused by the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption and various industrial development projects.

While the Philippine government has issued Certificates of Ancestral Domain Title (CADT) to recognize Aeta land rights, the process remains fraught with difficulty. Since the first Certificate of Ancestral Domain Claim was granted in 1996, many communities have struggled to secure legal recognition for their territories. Tensions persist as Aeta groups navigate the pressures of mining, mega-dam construction, and forced relocation, often finding themselves at odds with state-led initiatives that threaten their traditional ways of life.
