How a decade of firing people prepared Al Madrigal for the comedy stage
In short: Before he became a fixture on The Daily Show and co-founded the All Things Comedy network, Al Madrigal spent ten years in a family staffing agency. His primary duty was firing employees, a high-pressure role that eliminated his stage fright and prepared him for the unpredictability of stand-up comedy.
Born in San Francisco to a Mexican father and Sicilian mother, Al Madrigal’s career path was unconventional. After working in his family's human resources business, he transitioned to full-time comedy in 1998. His early stand-up often grappled with his multiethnic identity, a theme he frequently explored as he navigated being pigeonholed as a Latino comic while simultaneously facing criticism for not speaking Spanish.
Madrigal’s rise to prominence included a five-season stint as a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, where he was often billed as the Senior Latino Correspondent. His comedic style, noted for deconstructing stereotypes, was showcased in specials like 2013's Why Is The Rabbit Crying? and 2017's Shrimpin' Ain't Easy. Beyond stand-up, he has maintained a prolific acting career, appearing in films like The Way Back and series such as About A Boy and Lopez vs. Lopez.
In 2012, Madrigal and Bill Burr co-founded All Things Comedy, an artist-owned cooperative designed to help comedians maintain ownership of their work. The network has grown significantly, now hosting over 50 podcasts and reaching nearly 5 million listeners monthly. Madrigal has also expanded his creative output into graphic novels, co-creating the 2022 comic book series Primos. This project, developed with former Marvel editor Axel Alonso, centers on three cousins with ancient Maya lineage, reflecting Madrigal’s ongoing commitment to increasing the representation of Latino stories and voices in media.
