How a corporate takeover is reshaping the fortunes of Al Qadsiah FC
In short: Once a dominant force in Saudi football, Al Qadsiah FC has spent decades navigating the volatile space between top-flight glory and relegation. Now, backed by the world's largest energy company, the club is attempting a high-stakes return to the summit of the Saudi Pro League.
Al Qadsiah FC, based in Khobar, holds a storied place in the history of the Saudi football league system. Since the inaugural 1976–77 season, the club has been a regular fixture in the top tier. Their golden era arrived in the early 1990s, a period defined by significant domestic and continental achievements. In the 1991–92 season, they secured their first top-flight title by defeating Al-Shabab 4–2 on penalties in the Crown Prince Cup. This success extended to the international stage during the 1993–94 season, when they won the Asian Cup Winners' Cup by defeating South China 6–2 on aggregate, alongside a 2–0 victory over Al-Nassr in the Saudi Federation Cup.
However, this period of dominance was followed by a sharp decline. After 21 consecutive seasons in the top flight, the club suffered its first-ever relegation in the 1996–97 season. Since the 1999–2000 season, the club's trajectory has been marked by inconsistency, characterized by five separate instances of promotion and relegation. This 'yo-yo' existence between divisions became the club's defining narrative for much of the following two decades.
The landscape for the club changed fundamentally in the summer of 2023. As part of a broader restructuring by the Saudi Ministry of Sports, Al Qadsiah was transformed into a company and acquired by Saudi Aramco. This massive injection of corporate backing signaled a new era of investment in transfers, specifically aimed at reclaiming their place in the Saudi Pro League. The strategy appears to be yielding results; on 6 May 2024, following a 2–2 draw against Ohod, the club officially secured promotion back to the top tier. To celebrate the club's excellence, the Al Qadsiah Awards were also inaugurated for the 2024–25 season, honoring both the men's and women's teams.
