From teenage choir sensation to a versatile career in broadcasting and stage performance
In short: Aled Jones rose to fame as a young chorister before evolving into a multifaceted broadcaster and performer. His journey from a Welsh-speaking community to national television and concert stages reveals a career defined by constant reinvention, spanning classical music, West End theatre, and long-running roles on both radio and television.
Born in 1970 in Bangor, Wales, Aled Jones began his musical path at age nine in the Bangor Cathedral choir. By eleven, he was a lead soloist. His breakthrough arrived in 1985 with a rendition of the song associated with the animated film The Snowman, which climbed to number five on the UK charts. This early success established his profile, though he later transitioned from his treble voice into a baritone career, studying at the Royal Academy of Music and the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Jones has maintained a prolific presence in British media for decades. His television work includes presenting Songs of Praise for the BBC since 2004 and hosting various programmes such as Cash in the Attic and Daybreak. His radio career is equally extensive, featuring roles on BBC Radio 2 and a long-standing association with Classic FM. Beyond broadcasting, he has pursued a significant stage career, appearing in productions like Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, as well as the West End production of White Christmas.
His career has been marked by diverse collaborations and accolades. He has recorded albums with Russell Watson, including the chart-topping Back in Harmony, and participated in reality television, such as Strictly Come Dancing and The Masked Singer. In recognition of his contributions to music, broadcasting, and charity, he was appointed an MBE in 2013. Despite navigating public scrutiny, including a brief suspension by the BBC in 2017 that was later lifted, Jones has remained a consistent figure in the UK entertainment landscape, balancing his roles as a performer, presenter, and mentor to emerging classical artists.
