In short: Formed in 1996, Alkaline Trio evolved from a raw Chicago punk outfit into a chart-topping force. Through lineup shifts, label changes, and personal reinvention, the band maintained a consistent creative core. Their journey from basement shows to the Billboard 200 reveals the resilience required to sustain a multi-decade musical career.

Alkaline Trio emerged from the Chicago punk scene in December 1996, founded by Matt Skiba, Rob Doran, and Glenn Porter. The band quickly established a sound that resonated with listeners, releasing their debut single, "Sundials," in 1997. Following Doran's departure, Dan Andriano joined as co-lead vocalist and bassist, solidifying a partnership that would define the band's trajectory for years. Their early full-length albums, Goddamnit (1998) and Maybe I'll Catch Fire (2000), were released on Asian Man Records, setting a foundation for their subsequent commercial growth.

The band's profile expanded significantly with 2001's From Here to Infirmary, which became their first album to reach the Billboard 200 and gross six figures in sales. As they moved through labels like Vagrant and Epic, their sound shifted, incorporating higher production values on albums like 2003's Good Mourning and 2005's Crimson. By 2010, the band made a conscious effort to return to their punk roots with the album This Addiction, recorded in Chicago with early producer Matt Allison. This release became the highest-charting album of their career, debuting at No. 11 on the Billboard 200.

Throughout their history, the band navigated significant internal changes, including the long-term tenure and eventual 2023 departure of drummer Derek Grant. Despite these transitions—and side projects like Skiba's work with Blink-182—the band maintained a commitment to new music. Their 2014 "Past Live" tour, where they performed eight studio albums in their entirety, underscored their dedication to their catalog. Even as they faced challenges, such as Skiba's 2018 throat surgery, the band continued to release material, including their tenth album, Blood, Hair, and Eyeballs, in 2024, proving their enduring relevance in the punk rock landscape.
