In short: Fall Out Boy didn't just enter the mainstream; they conquered it through a decade of evolution. From their roots in Chicago’s underground scene to becoming a multi-platinum powerhouse, the band's trajectory serves as a masterclass in scaling an indie identity into global commercial dominance.

The band's foundation was built in Wilmette, Illinois, by Joe Trohman and Pete Wentz. Before finding mainstream success, they were staples of the local Chicago hardcore punk and heavy metal scenes. The current lineup solidified after Patrick Stump joined as lead vocalist, followed by drummer Andy Hurley joining after the release of their 2003 debut project. This transition from underground roots to a structured group allowed them to sign with Fueled by Ramen before eventually moving to major label Island Records.

Their commercial breakthrough arrived in May 2005 with From Under the Cork Tree. The album achieved double platinum status, propelled largely by the massive success of 'Sugar, We're Goin Down' and 'Dance, Dance.' These two singles alone surpassed two million downloads each, establishing a blueprint for their crossover appeal. By 2007, they reached the top of the Billboard 200 with Infinity on High, which debuted with 260,000 first-week sales.

The band's trajectory hit a unique milestone in 2018. After an indefinite hiatus announced in 2009, they returned to release Mania in January 2018. This album marked their third consecutive number one on the Billboard 200 and their fourth overall. They continued this streak with American Beauty/American Psycho in early 2015, which sold 192,000 copies in its first week. Their most recent studio effort, So Much (for) Stardust, was released in March 2023.

Over their career, the group has built a massive body of work including eight studio albums, 47 singles, and 53 music videos. This output reflects a shift from high-energy punk influences to polished pop-rock sensibilities that have maintained their relevance across different eras of the music industry.
