How a single independent wrestling event launched a multi-billion dollar empire
In short: In 2018, a non-affiliated wrestling show sold out in just 30 minutes. This massive success didn't just prove there was an appetite for change; it provided the blueprint for All Elite Wrestling, a powerhouse that now challenges the industry's long-standing dominance.
The origins of All Elite Wrestling (AEW) trace back to the unexpected triumph of 'All In' in September 2018. Organized by wrestlers Cody Rhodes and The Young Bucks, the event drew 11,263 attendees, marking the largest U.S. crowd for a non-WWE or WCW-affiliated promotion since 1993. This momentum allowed Tony Khan to officially announce the formation of AEW on January 1, 2019, backed by significant investment from the Khan family.
Since its inception, AEW has rapidly ascended the global ranks. Today, it stands as the second-largest wrestling promotion globally and the third most valuable combat sports entity, with an estimated valuation of US$2 billion. The company's reach is vast, broadcasting programming to 220 territories in 50 different languages. Its television presence, specifically the show Dynamite, famously ignited the 'Wednesday Night Wars' in 2019 by outperforming WWE's NXT in key viewership demographics.
The promotion's growth has been marked by both strategic acquisitions and internal volatility. In 2022, Khan acquired Ring of Honor (ROH), intending to use it as a developmental brand. However, the company has also navigated intense drama, such as the 'Brawl Out' incident in 2022 involving CM Punk, and the high-profile departure of Punk in 2023 following a backstage altercation. Despite these shifts, AEW continues to expand, recently securing a multi-year extension with Warner Bros. Discovery to bring its content to the Max streaming service.
