In short: Paramore's 2005 debut, All We Know Is Falling, almost never happened. After the bassist quit just days into recording, the remaining members channeled their frustration into the album's theme. Despite a rocky start and label skepticism, the record eventually became a scene classic, proving that sometimes failure fuels success.

Released on July 26, 2005, All We Know Is Falling was the result of a high-pressure environment in Orlando, Florida. Lead singer Hayley Williams had originally signed to Atlantic Records as a solo artist in 2003, but she opted to form a band with friends Josh Farro, Zac Farro, and Jeremy Davis instead. The label was initially unimpressed, nearly dropping the group until Williams and Farro wrote new material to save their contract.

The recording process was further complicated when bassist Jeremy Davis unexpectedly left the band shortly after they arrived in Florida. The remaining trio decided to continue, centering the album's aesthetic and narrative on the void left by his absence. The cover art, featuring an empty couch and a retreating shadow, serves as a visual representation of this sudden departure. While the band eventually brought in session musician Lucio Rubino to handle bass duties, the emotional weight of the experience defined the project's tone.

Commercially, the album had a slow start. The label intentionally avoided a major radio push, preferring to build a fanbase through word of mouth. It failed to break into the Billboard 200, though it eventually found success following the band's later releases. By 2014, the album earned gold certification in the United States, and it has since been retrospectively labeled a scene classic. Critics remain divided on its merits, with some praising Williams' powerful vocals while others find the song structures linear or formulaic, yet its legacy as a foundational moment for the group remains undisputed.
