Why Paramore's 2007 breakthrough album Riot! captured the raw energy of a generation
In short: Released in 2007, Paramore's second studio album Riot! became a defining moment for pop-punk. Driven by the breakthrough hit Misery Business, the record channeled the band's chaotic emotions into a polished, high-energy sound that resonated with listeners, eventually earning triple-platinum status and securing a lasting legacy in alternative music.
Paramore recorded Riot! between January and April 2007 under producer David Bendeth. Lead vocalist Hayley Williams explained that the title reflected the band's inability to contain their rapidly emerging thoughts and emotions during the writing process. The album served as a development of their debut, All We Know Is Falling, aiming for a more mature, raw energy. Despite internal instability—including the temporary expulsion of bassist Jeremy Davis and the departure of guitarist Hunter Lamb—the band produced eleven tracks that critics described as a blend of emo angst and catchy pop-rock.
The songwriting process was deeply collaborative and personal. For the track Born for This, the band held an online contest for fans to contribute backing vocals, while the lyrics were inspired by a line from the Swedish hardcore band Refused. The hit single Misery Business originated from a LiveJournal post where Williams asked fans to share their secrets, finding that many were desperate to confide in someone. This commitment to honest, relatable storytelling helped the album achieve significant commercial success, peaking at number fifteen on the Billboard 200.
Critical reception was generally favorable, with reviewers noting the band's crossover potential and technical growth. While some critics found the sound familiar, others praised its consistency and emotional resonance. Over time, the album's status has only grown; it has been featured on numerous lists of essential pop-punk records and was recognized by Loudwire in 2023 as one of the top rock and metal albums released in the 21st century. By 2021, the RIAA certified the album triple-platinum, cementing its place as a cornerstone of the era's alternative scene.
