A Disney+ fantasy series reimagines ancient Chinese mythology through a modern American high school lens.
In short: When a typical teenager is tasked with guiding a new exchange student, he is pulled into a celestial conflict involving legendary figures like the Monkey King. This adaptation of a landmark graphic novel blends coming-of-age struggles with epic martial arts, exploring the complexities of identity across two distinct cultures.
Created by Kelvin Yu, the series American Born Chinese adapts Gene Luen Yang’s 2006 graphic novel, which was itself inspired by the classic Chinese literary work Journey to the West. The show follows Jin Wang, a tenth-grader at Sierra Mona High School, whose life is upended when he meets Wei-Chen, an exchange student who is secretly the son of the legendary Monkey King, Sun Wukong. Wei-Chen arrives in California on a mission to locate a mythical scroll capable of preventing an uprising against Heaven, believing Jin is the ordinary human destined to assist him.
The production is notable for reuniting several cast members from the 2022 film Everything Everywhere All at Once, including Michelle Yeoh, who portrays the deity Guanyin, and Ke Huy Quan. Quan initially hesitated to accept his role, fearing it relied on stereotypical portrayals of Asian characters. However, he eventually joined the project after discussions with the creative team, who explained that the narrative would eventually deconstruct these tropes by revealing the personal struggles of the actor behind the character. The show’s soundtrack, composed by Wendy Wang, further emphasizes its multicultural themes by blending contemporary rap and pop.
While the series earned a 94% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and was praised for its inventive action sequences and heartfelt storytelling, it faced criticism for its deviations from the source material. Specifically, some viewers in Taiwan objected to the decision to change the character of Wei-Chen from Taiwanese to Chinese. Despite positive critical reception and significant online engagement, Disney+ canceled the series in January 2024 after only one season, citing low viewership numbers. The show remains a unique experiment in bringing ancient folklore into the context of modern American adolescent life.
