A legendary trickster from Chinese folklore gets a high-energy, modern animated reimagining on Netflix.
In short: Based on the classic Ming dynasty novel Journey to the West, this 2023 animated feature follows a stone-born monkey on a quest for godhood. While the film delivers vibrant action and visual flair, it sparked mixed reactions from critics regarding its humor and the protagonist's abrasive personality.
Directed by Anthony Stacchi, The Monkey King represents a collaborative production between the United States, China, and Hong Kong. The narrative adapts the first seven chapters of the seminal Chinese text, Journey to the West, tracking the titular character's journey from an unruly outcast born of stone to a power-hungry deity. Voiced by Jimmy O. Yang, the Monkey King seeks immortality by erasing his name from the Scroll of Life and Death and eventually consuming a divine elixir. His path is complicated by his condescending treatment of his assistant, Lin, and his ongoing conflict with the Dragon King, who seeks to reclaim a magical staff.
The production history of the film was notably turbulent. Originally announced in 2017 by Oriental DreamWorks, the project stalled before being revived by Netflix in 2021. Animation duties shifted multiple times, moving from Reel FX to Tangent Animation, and finally back to Reel FX’s Montreal facilities after Tangent shut down in August 2021. This behind-the-scenes instability did not prevent the film from reaching its world premiere at the 22nd New York Asian Film Festival on July 30, 2023, followed by a global Netflix release on August 18, 2023.
Critical reception remained divided upon release. While reviewers frequently praised the film's energetic animation and action sequences, many found the screenplay and humor lacking. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film holds a 59% approval rating based on 46 reviews, with an average score of 5.7/10. Critics like Amy Nicholson noted the frenetic visual style, while others, such as David Rooney, characterized the film as a charming but uneven attempt to distill a centuries-old epic into a modern, accessible folktale. Despite being considered for the 96th Academy Awards in the Best Animated Feature category, the film ultimately did not secure a nomination.
