In short: In an era of digital discovery, Amy Macdonald rose to fame through a traditional method. After teaching herself guitar from a chord book, she sent a demo to a production company. This single act led to a multi-platinum debut and over 12 million records sold worldwide.

Macdonald, born in Bishopbriggs in 1987, began her musical journey after watching Travis perform at the 2000 T in the Park festival. After teaching herself to play on her father's guitar, she began performing in Glasgow pubs and coffee houses, such as the Brunswick Cellars, by age 15. She was inspired to play music after hearing the song 'Turn' by Travis. Her early performances took place around Glasgow at the age of 15.

Her breakthrough came via an advertisement in NME. She sent a demo CD to a new production company run by Pete Wilkinson and Sarah Erasmus. Wilkinson was reportedly "literally aghast" at her songwriting talent when hearing tracks like "This Is the Life" and "Mr. Rock & Roll." After eight or nine months of recording demos at Wilkinson's home studio, she signed with Vertigo at age 18. At age 18, she signed with Vertigo.

Her 2007 debut, This Is the Life, was a massive commercial success, selling three million copies and reaching number one in the UK, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Switzerland. The single of the same name topped charts in six countries and reached the top 10 in 11 others. This success continued through subsequent albums like A Curious Thing (2010) and Life in a Beautiful Light (2012). In 2012, her third album, Life in a Beautiful Light, arrived. This was followed by her fourth studio album, Under Stars, in 2017.

Macdonald has since sold over 12 million records globally. Notable achievements include her 2010 collaboration with Ray Davies on the See My Friends album and her appearance at the 2014 Commonwealth Games opening ceremony. She also released a greatest hits collection titled Woman of the World in 2018. This compilation featured several of her most successful tracks alongside new material.
