In short: Long before he led the New York Islanders, Anders Lee was a dual-sport phenom in Minnesota. His high school football career was so impressive that scouts feared he might choose the gridiron over the ice. Instead, he became a cornerstone of NHL hockey, eventually signing a major contract with Utah.

Born in Edina, Minnesota, in 1990, Anders Lee excelled in football, baseball, and ice hockey from a young age. His athletic versatility was evident during his senior year at Edina High School, where he passed for over 2,000 yards and rushed for over 1,000 yards as a quarterback. His performance earned him the 2008 Minnesota Gatorade Football Player of the Year award. Despite his success on the field, Lee ultimately chose to pursue hockey at the University of Notre Dame, a decision that shaped his professional trajectory.

Drafted 151st overall by the New York Islanders in 2009, Lee faced early skepticism from scouts who questioned his skating ability and feared he would prioritize football. He proved his doubters wrong during his collegiate career and his transition to the professional ranks. After signing with the Islanders in 2013, he quickly made an impact, scoring a goal on his first career NHL shot. His rise continued as he became a mainstay in the lineup, eventually earning the captaincy in 2018 following the departure of John Tavares.

Lee's professional journey has been marked by both high-scoring seasons and significant physical setbacks. He recorded a career-high 40 goals during the 2017–18 season and later signed a seven-year, $49 million contract with the Islanders. However, he also endured major injuries, including a torn ACL in 2021 and a broken fibula in 2016. In 2026, he transitioned to the Utah Mammoth on a three-year deal. Beyond the rink, Lee has dedicated himself to philanthropy, raising over $300,000 for childhood cancer through his partnership with Jam Kancer in the Kan.
