From Texas Junior Champion to Major Winner: The Enduring Career of Angela Stanford
In short: Born in Saginaw, Texas, Angela Stanford built a career defined by consistency and resilience. After dominating the collegiate circuit at Texas Christian University, she spent over two decades on the LPGA Tour, culminating in a major championship victory in 2018 and a transition into coaching her alma mater.
Angela Stanford’s path to professional golf began in Texas, where she claimed the Fort Worth Girls Championship four times between 1993 and 1996. Her amateur success continued at Texas Christian University, where she was a four-time All-American and earned a degree in speech communication in 2000. Her transition to the professional ranks was swift; after turning pro in August 2000, she secured exempt status for the 2001 LPGA Tour by finishing fourth in the final qualifying tournament.
Stanford’s professional career was marked by steady performance and high-stakes competition. She secured her first LPGA victory at the 2003 ShopRite LPGA Classic. That same year, she nearly captured a major title at the U.S. Women's Open, ultimately losing to Hilary Lunke by a single stroke in an 18-hole playoff. Her best financial season occurred in 2008, when she earned over $1.1 million, finishing ninth on the money list. She remained a fixture in international team events, representing the United States in six Solheim Cups between 2003 and 2015.
The pinnacle of her professional achievement arrived on September 16, 2018, when she won the Evian Championship, her first and only major title. Stanford’s longevity in the sport was notable, as she maintained a streak of 12 consecutive cuts made between the 2009 and 2012 British Open tournaments. Following her retirement after the 2024 season, she remained active in the game, serving as the non-playing captain for the 2026 U.S. Solheim Cup team before returning to Texas Christian University as an assistant women's golf coach.
