The airfield that serves as the primary gateway for the world's most powerful leaders
In short: Beyond the gates of Andrews Air Force Base lies the high-stakes world of presidential travel. As the home of Air Force One, this Maryland airfield is far more than a military installation; it is a critical hub for global diplomacy, hosting kings, queens, and popes as they enter the United States.
Located near Morningside, Maryland, Andrews Air Force Base serves as the vital airfield for Joint Base Andrews. While it is a massive military operation, its most visible role is supporting the President of the United States. The base is home to two Boeing VC-25A aircraft, which carry the famous Air Force One call sign whenever the president is on board. Before 1961, presidential flights were managed from Washington National Airport and Bolling AFB, but Andrews has since become the primary port of entry for foreign dignitaries and senior U.S. officials.
The base's history is deeply intertwined with the evolution of American air power. In 1941, President Roosevelt directed that the land be used for an airfield, leading to the establishment of Camp Springs Air Base. By 1943, the airfield was operational with the arrival of Republic P-47 Thunderbolts. Throughout the mid-20th century, the base underwent several reorganizations, eventually becoming the primary USAF flight installation for the Washington, D.C., area by 1962 following the closure of the runway at Bolling AFB.
Today, the 316th Wing serves as the host unit, managing a complex ecosystem that includes more than 80 tenant organizations and 148 geographically separated units. The base's responsibilities extend beyond flight operations to include ceremonial support via the United States Air Force Band and Honor Guard. It also maintains critical contingency response capabilities for the National Capital Region, ensuring security and readiness for the nation's highest-ranking leaders and the vast number of military personnel stationed throughout the region.
