From police corruption to animal rescue: the unlikely journey of a Fox sitcom
In short: What happens when a cynical ex-cop trades his precinct for a municipal animal control unit? This Fox sitcom follows a diverse team in Seattle, navigating the chaotic intersection of animal welfare and human dysfunction through a lens of sharp, caustic humor.
Created by Bob Fisher, Rob Greenberg, and Dan Sterling, Animal Control premiered on Fox on February 16, 2023. The series follows the lives of municipal animal control workers in Seattle, centered on Frank Shaw, played by Joel McHale. Once a police officer, Frank was dismissed from the force after uncovering corruption within his precinct. While his persona is defined by sarcasm and caustic remarks, later episodes reveal a man struggling with depression and self-consciousness.
The ensemble cast includes Vella Lovell as Emily Price, the competitive and occasionally anxious director of the A.C. Northwest precinct, and Michael Rowland as Fred "Shred" Taylor, an idealistic former professional snowboarder. The workplace dynamics are further complicated by characters like Amit Patel, who struggles with his large family, and Victoria Sands, a street-smart officer from New Zealand who engages in a flirtatious prank war with Frank.
The show's production history is marked by consistent renewals. Following its initial release, Fox ordered a second season, which premiered on March 6, 2024. The series continued to expand, with a third season premiering on January 2, 2025, a fourth season debuting on December 28, 2025, and a fifth season arriving on September 27, 2026. While critical reception has been varied—with Rotten Tomatoes reporting a 60% approval rating for the first season and Metacritic assigning a score of 68 out of 100—the show has maintained a steady presence on the network.
