In short: Known to millions as the formidable Governess on The Chase, Anne Hegerty is far more than a television personality. From her early days as a journalist to her competitive quizzing prowess and frequent pantomime appearances, Hegerty has built a multifaceted career that spans literature, charity music, and high-stakes trivia.

Born in London in 1958, Anne Solway Hegerty began her professional life in journalism, working as a reporter and feature writer for the South Wales Argus during the 1980s. Her early writing career also included ghostwriting two books for American children's author Richard Scarry, though she has candidly described these efforts as unsuccessful. Eventually, Hegerty transitioned into the world of professional quizzing, a field where she has achieved significant international recognition.

Hegerty is best known for her role as a chaser on the ITV game show The Chase, a position she has held since 2010. Her expertise extends beyond the British version of the programme; she also serves as a chaser for the Australian and New Zealand iterations of the show. Her competitive pedigree is extensive, including appearances on shows like Mastermind and Brain of Britain. In October 2016, she held the 55th position in the World Quizzing Championships, ranking second among women.

Beyond the quiz circuit, Hegerty has maintained a busy schedule in theatre and television. She has performed in numerous pantomimes across the UK, taking on roles such as the Wicked Stepmother in Cinderella and Queen Rat in Dick Whittington. Additionally, she has participated in reality television, including the 18th series of I'm a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here! in 2018, and has contributed to various charity music projects with a collective known as the Celebs. Hegerty, who is a practising Catholic and was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome in her 40s, continues to reside in Manchester.

Her influence reaches into the broader cultural landscape through her involvement in charitable efforts, such as recording covers of songs like the Beatles' 'Let It Be' to support the mental health charity Mind. Whether she is competing in the Quiz League of London or navigating the complexities of reality television, Hegerty remains a prominent figure in British media, blending intellectual rigour with a diverse range of public performances.
