In short: Born in Afghanistan to a Russian mother and a Punjabi Hindu Indian father, Annet Mahendru’s upbringing was a whirlwind of international borders. Before her breakout television roles, she was a student of international relations, driven by a desire to advocate for women in Afghanistan.

Mahendru’s early life was defined by movement. Born on November 5, 1985, in Kabul, Afghanistan, she spent her first seven years split between Afghanistan and Saint Petersburg. Following her parents' separation when she was 13, she moved to East Meadow, New York. A wandering upbringing provided her with an impressive range of languages; she is fluent in English, German, Russian, and Persian, can converse in French and Hindi, and employs Dari for family discussions. Her childhood involved frequent trips to Frankfurt. Her grandmother's origins can be traced back to Nepal.

Her career path took a sharp turn from diplomacy to the arts. Mahendru originally intended to use her "ethnic ambiguity" to work for the United Nations and was enrolled in a master's degree program for international relations at New York University. However, she eventually dropped out to pursue acting, moving to Los Angeles to study improv at The Groundlings. She previously participated in competitive cheerleading and kick line teams during high school.

Mahendru has since built a diverse filmography. A 2014 Critics' Choice Award nomination followed her acclaimed performance as Nina Sergeevna Krilova throughout the FX drama The Americans (2013–2016). Her TV work also features Jennifer "Huck" Mallick within The Walking Dead: World Beyond (2020) alongside her 2025 debut in an Indian role as Reena Trivedi in Leverage: Redemption. Despite her global travels, she maintains deep ties to her Indian, Russian, and Afghan roots. She also appeared in the HBO comedy Entourage. Additionally, she had a voice role in the animated film Penguins of Madagascar.
