In short: Luanne Ruth Schedeen, known professionally as Anne Schedeen, spent her childhood hiding under dining room tables to avoid social interaction. Yet, through youth drama classes, she transformed her extreme introversion into a prolific acting career, eventually becoming the iconic television mother who welcomed an alien into her home on ALF.

Born in Portland, Oregon, in 1949, Schedeen grew up on a farm outside Gresham. Her father, Roland E. 'Poly' Schedeen, was a farmer and former Oregon State Senator, while her mother, Betty Jane, sought to curb her daughter's intense shyness by enrolling her in the Portland Civic Theatre. This early exposure to performance eventually led her from the Pacific Northwest to New York City, where she cut her teeth in summer stock theatre and commercials before securing a contract with Universal Pictures in Los Angeles.

Schedeen's television career spanned decades, beginning in 1974. She became a familiar face in the 1970s with recurring roles on series like Emergency! and Three's Company, and guest spots on Marcus Welby, M.D. Her film work included the 1976 sci-fi horror movie Embryo, where she starred alongside Rock Hudson. However, her defining role arrived in 1986 when she was cast as Kate Tanner in the sitcom ALF. The show, which depicted a suburban family sheltering an extraterrestrial, became a massive commercial success and brought Schedeen international recognition during its four-season run.

Following the conclusion of ALF in 1990, Schedeen continued to work in television and film, appearing in projects like the 1996 thriller Heaven's Prisoners and the legal drama Judging Amy in 2001. Beyond her acting, she dedicated her later years to philanthropy, serving as an ambassador for the Bulgarian non-profit Holiday Heroes starting in 2015. Schedeen passed away on June 14, 2026, at the age of 77, leaving behind a legacy that bridged the gap between her quiet, rural beginnings and the global stage of prime-time television.

While her professional life was defined by high-profile roles, Schedeen maintained a private personal life, marrying talent agent Christopher Barrett in 1982. Her journey from an introverted child who feared the world to a performer who commanded it remains a testament to the transformative power of the arts.
