From Potsie to Ojai: The unexpected second act of actor Anson Williams
In short: Best known as the gullible singer Potsie Weber on Happy Days, Anson Williams transitioned from television stardom to a prolific career as a director and producer. Beyond the screen, his life has spanned business ventures, a mayoral run, and a late-in-life marriage that he calls a miracle.
Born Anson William Heimlich in 1949, the actor rose to fame in the 1970s as a central figure in the hit series Happy Days. While his character, Potsie, became an iconic television presence, Williams eventually pivoted behind the camera. He built a substantial resume directing episodes for numerous series, including Beverly Hills, 90210, Melrose Place, and Sabrina the Teenage Witch. His work also extended to producing television movies and afterschool specials, demonstrating a versatility that moved him far beyond his initial role.
Williams's life outside of entertainment has been equally varied. He founded a cosmetics company and briefly operated a diner chain with co-star Al Molinaro. In 2011, he joined other Happy Days cast members in a high-profile $10 million breach-of-contract lawsuit against CBS regarding unpaid merchandising revenues. The dispute, which centered on royalties for items like lunch boxes and slot machines, was settled in 2012 with each actor receiving $65,000. Later, in 2022, he narrowly lost a mayoral race in Ojai, California, by just 42 votes.
Personal resilience has been a recurring theme in his later years. After surviving colon cancer in 2016, Williams found a new chapter with memoirist Sharon MaHarry. The two married in 2023, a milestone Williams described as a profound connection found at age 73. Today, he continues to balance creative projects, such as collaborating on a stage play, with a philosophy that prioritizes authentic human connection over the notoriety of his earlier Hollywood career.
