In short: Dick Van Patten was a fixture of American entertainment, transitioning from a prolific Broadway child actor to the beloved patriarch of Eight Is Enough. Beyond his iconic television roles, he navigated a diverse career that included founding a pet food company and championing animal welfare, leaving an enduring cultural legacy.

Born in Queens in 1928, Richard Vincent Van Patten began his professional life as a child model and actor, making his Broadway debut at age seven in 1935. Throughout his teenage years, he appeared in over a dozen theatrical productions, including The Skin of Our Teeth. His early career also included radio work on Duffy's Tavern, setting the stage for a transition into the burgeoning medium of television. By 1949, he secured a role in the live sitcom Mama, playing Nels Hansen, a character whose name would later inspire the name of his own son.

Van Patten's career was marked by remarkable versatility, spanning everything from serious film roles to comedic collaborations with Mel Brooks. He appeared in cult classics like Soylent Green and Spaceballs, and even ventured into unexpected territories, such as serving as a commentator for the World Series of Poker between 1993 and 1995. Despite his success, he faced periods of professional uncertainty, at one point working as a real estate agent in New York before his eventual return to prominence as Tom Bradford on the hit series Eight Is Enough, which aired from 1977 to 1981.

Beyond the screen, Van Patten was a dedicated animal advocate, founding Natural Balance Pet Foods in 1989 and establishing National Guide Dog Month. His personal life was deeply intertwined with the industry; he was married to professional dancer Patricia Helon Poole for over six decades, and his extended family included numerous actors and directors. Van Patten passed away in 2015 at age 86 due to complications from Type 2 diabetes. His colleagues remembered him as a consummate professional and a jovial, kind presence who remained deeply committed to his craft until the end.
