In short: Formed in Los Angeles in 1982, Armored Saint became a cornerstone of the heavy metal scene. Despite their influence, the band is defined by a unique history of loyalty: both their singer and bassist famously declined invitations to join Metallica, choosing to keep their original band alive instead.

Armored Saint was established in 1982 by brothers Phil and Gonzo Sandoval, alongside Dave Prichard, John Bush, and Joey Vera. The band's name was inspired by the film Excalibur, which Gonzo Sandoval watched in a parking lot. Their early trajectory was marked by significant industry interest; in 1983, Metallica drummer Lars Ulrich invited John Bush to audition as a replacement for James Hetfield, but Bush declined to remain with his bandmates. Similarly, in 1986, Joey Vera was approached to replace Metallica's late bassist Cliff Burton, an offer he also rejected to stay with Armored Saint.

The band's resilience was tested by profound tragedy. In 1990, original guitarist Dave Prichard died of leukemia while the band was preparing their fourth album, Symbol of Salvation. The group persevered, releasing the album in 1991 as a tribute to Prichard, even incorporating his guitar solo from a demo recording into the final track, Tainted Past. Following this, the band faced a period of instability, leading to a hiatus in 1992 when John Bush joined Anthrax. Despite these setbacks and various lineup changes, the core members—Bush and Vera—eventually reunited in 1999 to continue recording.

Over the decades, Armored Saint has maintained a deliberate approach to their craft, prioritizing quality over rapid output. Their discography includes nine studio albums, with releases like 2015's Win Hands Down and 2020's Punching the Sky receiving critical attention. By 2026, the band continued to evolve, announcing their ninth studio album, Emotion Factory Reset, and maintaining a touring schedule that includes major festivals and international runs. Their journey reflects a rare commitment to artistic continuity, surviving the loss of founding members and the pressures of the music industry to remain active more than four decades after their inception.
