The heavy metal pioneers who survived decades of lineup shifts and label feuds
In short: Formed in 1979, Exodus helped define the Bay Area thrash scene. Despite losing members to legendary bands like Metallica, enduring bitter legal disputes, and facing two extended hiatuses, they have remained a cornerstone of the genre, selling over five million albums worldwide.
The history of Exodus is a complex web of musical influence and internal volatility. While the band is recognized as one of the 'Big Eight' of thrash metal—alongside giants like Metallica, Slayer, and Megadeth—their journey has been marked by significant instability. The group's early years saw the departure of founding guitarist Kirk Hammett, who left in 1983 to join Metallica, a move that fundamentally altered the band's trajectory and left guitarist Gary Holt to take creative control.
The band's commercial peaks and setbacks often coincided with label transitions. Their 1985 debut, *Bonded by and Blood*, is now considered a landmark of the genre, though critics suggest a release delay hindered its initial impact. A later move to Capitol Records in 1989 brought the hit 'The Toxic Waltz' to MTV, but the subsequent album, *Impact Is Imminent*, saw the band's lowest Billboard 200 position at number 137. Financial disputes also famously cut short tours and prevented the release of live concert footage.
Despite the loss of iconic vocalists like Paul Baloff, who passed away in 2002, and various hiatuses, the band experienced a significant revival. The 2004 release of *Tempo of the Damned* is credited as a key driver in the early-to-mid-2000s thrash metal resurgence. Today, the lineup features long-standing members like drummer Tom Hunting and guitarist Gary Holt, maintaining a legacy that includes thirteen studio albums and a global presence.
