Aseefa Bhutto Zardari is the first daughter in Pakistani history to be First Lady
In short: Born in London and raised in a political dynasty, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari has redefined the role of First Lady in Pakistan. Beyond her ceremonial title, she is a member of the National Assembly and a long-time advocate for polio eradication, marking a distinct shift in the nation's political landscape.
Born on 3 February 1993 to former Prime Minister Benazir Bhutto and current President Asif Ali Zardari, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari has been a public figure since infancy. In 1994, she became the first child in Pakistan to receive a polio vaccine during the country's inaugural National Immunisation Day. This early introduction to public health advocacy evolved into a formal role in 2009, when her father appointed her as an ambassador for the national polio eradication campaign. Her work in this capacity, which included engaging with affected families and officials, earned her a commemorative plaque from Rotary International in 2013.
Aseefa’s academic background includes degrees from Oxford Brookes University and the University of Edinburgh, followed by a master's degree from University College London in 2016. Her political trajectory accelerated in 2020 when she made her debut at a rally in Multan. By 2024, she had become a central figure in the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) campaign, supporting her brother, Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Following her father's election as the 14th President of Pakistan in March 2024, he designated Aseefa as First Lady—a historic departure from his previous term, during which the position remained vacant following the assassination of his wife.
Her entry into the National Assembly in April 2024 followed an unopposed victory in the NA-207 Nawabshah-I by-election. This seat was vacated by her father upon his presidential inauguration. While her election was met with allegations of procedural irregularities from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, including claims that rival candidate Ghulam Mustafa Rind was coerced into withdrawal, Aseefa remains a significant political force. Her influence is further highlighted by her active engagement in party affairs, with some observers noting that she has long been viewed as particularly astute within the political circles of the PPP.
