From software engineer to Tamil cinema star: the versatile career of actor Arya
In short: Born Jamshad Cethirakath, the actor known as Arya transitioned from a background in software engineering to becoming a prominent figure in South Indian cinema. Through a series of diverse roles, ranging from rogue hitmen to period drama leads, he has navigated the competitive landscape of Tamil, Telugu, and Malayalam film industries.
Arya's entry into the film industry was unconventional. While working as an assistant software engineer, he was discovered by cinematographer Jeeva, who cast him in the film Ullam Ketkumae. Although that project faced delays, his actual screen debut occurred in 2005 with Vishnuvardhan's Arinthum Ariyamalum. His performance as a gangster's adopted son earned him immediate praise, with critics noting his potential for the big league. This early success was quickly followed by roles in films like Pattiyal, which solidified his status as a leading actor.
The year 2010 marked a significant turning point in his career. He expanded his reach by appearing in his first Telugu film, Varudu, and starred in the period drama Madrasapattinam. That same year, he achieved his first blockbuster with the comedy Boss Engira Bhaskaran, a film also co-produced by his own banner, The Show People. This production company was established to support small-budget projects and promote new talent, reflecting his deeper involvement in the industry beyond acting.
Arya is known for his physical dedication to roles, such as growing a full-length beard for the 2009 drama Naan Kadavul and building a muscular frame for the 2013 fantasy film Irandam Ulagam. His filmography spans various genres, including sports dramas like the 2021 film Sarpatta Parambarai, where he portrayed a boxer. Despite facing occasional box office failures and mixed critical reception, his ability to adapt to different character types—from soldiers to carefree youths—has maintained his relevance in the industry for nearly two decades.
