In short: In the late 1970s, European aerospace giants were moving toward massive multinational collaborations. One such venture, a joint effort between Aérospatiale and Aeritalia, aimed to do something radical: build a regional airliner that could fly much more efficiently than its competitors.

The ATR 42 was born from a 1981 agreement between French Aérospatial and Italian Aeritalia, merging two independent aircraft concepts—the AS 35 and the AIT 230—into a single design. The goal was to create a high-wing turboprop that could drastically reduce fuel consumption. The engineers targeted a fuel burn of approximately 430 kg over a 200 nautical mile sector, which was nearly half the 790 kg required by established competitors like the Fokker F.27 and the British Aerospace HS.748.

The aircraft's name itself is a functional descriptor, derived from its original standard capacity of 42 passengers. Since its maiden flight in August 1984, the platform has undergone significant evolution. While the initial -300 series focused on efficiency, later iterations like the -500 series introduced more powerful PW127 engines and six-bladed propellers. The most recent major iteration, the -600 series, brought a modern glass cockpit and improved dispatch reliability, helping the aircraft maintain a dominant 48% global market share in the 50–90 seat sector by 2013.

The program's longevity is tied to its manufacturing synergy with the larger ATR 72. Because both aircraft share the majority of their components and manufacturing techniques on the same production line, they support each other's continued production. This structural advantage was vital; by 2015, the ATR 4 bypass was the only 50-seat regional aircraft still being manufactured. Even as the company explored specialized STOL (short takeoff and landing) variants to access smaller 800-meter runways, it ultimately chose to focus on the broader efficiency of the existing family.
