August Derleth was a literary powerhouse who wrote over 100 books in his lifetime.
In short: A prolific American writer and publisher, August Derleth is best known for founding Arkham House and creating the detective Solar Pons. Yet, his most ambitious work was the Sac Prairie Saga, a massive, multi-genre effort to memorialize the life and landscape of his native Wisconsin through fiction, poetry, and nature writing.
Born in 1909 in Sauk City, Wisconsin, August Derleth was a remarkably industrious figure who began writing fiction at age 13. By the time of his death in 1971, he had produced more than 150 short stories and over 100 books. His career spanned diverse genres, including science fiction, biography, and detective fiction, but he was fundamentally defined by his deep connection to his home region. His Sac Prairie Saga, which he envisioned as a 50-novel series, aimed to capture the essence of Midwestern life, drawing comparisons to the works of Balzac and Proust.
Derleth’s literary reputation was complex. While he was a 1938 Guggenheim Fellow and a respected regionalist, he faced sharp criticism from his mentor, Sinclair Lewis, who famously urged him to use a 'blue pencil' to refine his work. Despite this, Derleth’s influence was profound. He co-founded Arkham House in 1939 to publish the works of H. P. Lovecraft and made significant contributions to the Cthulhu Mythos. His detective series featuring Solar Pons—a pastiche of Sherlock Holmes—earned praise from mystery experts like Ellery Queen for its fidelity and construction, even surviving legal challenges from the estate of Arthur Conan Doyle.
Beyond his fiction, Derleth was a dedicated naturalist and conservationist. Works like his 1961 meditation Walden West are often cited as his finest, blending philosophical musings with acute observations of the natural world. Whether he was serving as a local school board president, lecturing at the University of Wisconsin, or editing his own magazine, Hawk and Whippoorwill, Derleth maintained a relentless pace, reportedly writing up to a million words annually. His legacy remains tied to the Wisconsin landscape he spent his life documenting, a place he described with a sense of belonging that critics noted was rare in modern literature.
