The political heavyweight that has never been out of power since 1945
In short: In the landscape of Austrian politics, one party has maintained a near-constant grip on governance for eight decades. From the ashes of World War II to the modern era of 'turquoise' rebranding, the Austrian People's Party has mastered the art of the coalition, surviving scandals and shifting ideologies.
Founded immediately after the restoration of Austrian independence in 1945, the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP) emerged as a successor to the Christian Social Party and the Fatherland Front. For much of the post-war era, it functioned as a pillar of the state, often governing in 'grand coalitions' with its rival, the Social Democratic Party (SPÖ). While it held the senior role in these partnerships from 1945 to 1966, it later served as a junior partner during various periods, including 1986–2000 and 2007–2017.
The party's history is marked by significant ideological and structural shifts. Traditionally a black-clad, Catholic, and conservative force, the ÖVP underwent a dramatic rebranding under Sebastian Kurz. In 2017, the party adopted a 'turquoise' identity, renaming itself 'The New People's Party' and shifting its platform toward a more rightward stance on immigration and political Islam. This era saw the party move away from its traditional role as a centrist 'catch-all' toward a program more closely aligned with the right-wing FPÖ.
Despite periods of intense political friction—such as the European Union's diplomatic sanctions against Austria in the early 2000s following a coalition with the FPÖ—the ÖVP has remained a central fixture in the Federal Assembly. Even during recent leadership transitions, including the resignation of Karl Nehammer and the appointment of Christian Stocker as acting leader in early 2025, the party continues to hold significant influence, maintaining a presence in all nine state legislatures and leading six of them.
