How a 19th-century composer inspired Ed Sheeran's most independent musical project to date
In short: When Ed Sheeran observed his friends navigating life's turbulent shifts, he sought a new framework for his songwriting. Inspired by Elgar’s Enigma Variations, where each composition depicted a different friend, Sheeran crafted Autumn Variations. This album marks a significant departure, serving as his first independent release under his own label.
Released on 29 September 2023, Autumn Variations represents a pivotal moment in Ed Sheeran's career. It is his seventh studio album and the first for which he retains the copyright, having issued it through his own label, Gingerbread Man Records. The project was produced almost entirely by Aaron Dessner, with the exception of the track Spring, which featured additional production from Bryce Dessner. This release followed his previous 2023 project, the album titled −, and arrived without the traditional promotional cycle of singles or music videos, save for American Town, which saw a limited release to Italian radio.
The thematic core of the album draws from the personal lives of Sheeran and his social circle. Sheeran described the period as one where everything either settled or imploded, prompting him to adopt the structure of Elgar’s Enigma Variations. This classical influence provided a template to dedicate individual songs to different friends, mirroring the way Elgar composed his own variations. To further ground the project, Sheeran recorded the Fan Living Room Sessions, a complete live version of the 14-track album performed in the homes of his supporters.
Critical reception of the work was notably polarized. Supporters like James Hall of The Telegraph praised the album as a mature and absorbing evolution, comparing Sheeran to a supercharged David Gray. Conversely, critics such as Rachel Aroesti of The Guardian dismissed the songwriting as unimaginative and lacking in nuance. Despite these mixed reviews, the album achieved commercial success, topping charts in the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. In the United States, it debuted at number four on the Billboard 200, driven by a record-breaking week for Sheeran in vinyl sales, even as the album’s presence on the charts proved fleeting, exiting the Billboard 200 by its third week.
