In short: Long before they were TV stars, B1 and B2 were just notes in a jaunty song. Discover how a simple British composition evolved from a Play School musical number into a global franchise featuring elaborate costumes, plush toys, and even commemorative coins.

The origins of Bananas in Pyjamas lie not in a television studio, but in a 1967 song written by British composer Carey Blyton. Originally performed on the Australian program Play School, the song featured an animation of bananas in blue-and-white striped pyjamas. This musical foundation eventually inspired the creation of a physical 'toy cast,' which provided the visual blueprint for the characters B1 and B2.

The television series officially debuted on 20 July 1992 on ABC. Developed by showrunner Helena Harris, the program utilized human actors in elaborate, heavy costumes, similar to the style of Teletubbies. While the original actors initially provided the voices for the characters they wore, the physical demands of the hot, stuffy costumes eventually led to the use of substitute performers. The show's world, centered in the Cuddles Avenue cul-de-sac, featured a diverse cast including the teddy bears Amy, Lulu, and Morgan, as well as the Rat in a Hat.

Over its decades-long history, the franchise has undergone significant transformations. The original live-action run produced approximately 300 episodes and four specials, continuing in syndication until 2002. In May 2011, the series was completely revamped into a CGI animated format by Southern Star Entertainment, introducing new characters like Topsy the kangaroo. The cultural impact of the series has even reached the Royal Australian Mint, which released commemorative 5-cent and 20-cent coins in 2017 to celebrate the show's 25th anniversary.
