In short: In 1940, what is now a prominent South Florida university was merely a tract of tropical vegetation. Founded by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, this institution has evolved from a women's college into a diverse, multi-campus university with a mission rooted in social justice.

Originally established as Barry College for Women, the institution was founded by siblings Patrick Barry, Bishop of St. Augustine, and Mary Gerald Barry. The construction of the campus began in 1940 on land that had previously been nothing more than tropical vegetation. For decades, the university's leadership was defined by the Adrian Dominican Sisters, with six sisters serving as president between 1940 and 2019. It wasn't until July 1, 2019, that Mike Allen became the first man and lay person to lead the university since its inception.

The university's identity is built on the Catholic intellectual tradition, emphasizing a cycle of learning, reflection, and informed action. This mission extends beyond the classroom through a commitment to social justice and community service, earning the institution the Community Engagement Classification from the Carnegie Foundation in 2015. The campus itself reflects this spiritual focus, centered around the Cor Jesu Chapel, which was completed thanks to a full donation from Margaret Brady Farrell.

Today, Barry University has expanded significantly. While the main campus remains in Miami Shores, the university operates a law school in Orlando and offers classes in the Bahamas and throughout Florida. The academic scope has grown from its liberal arts origins to include specialized doctoral programs in health care, podiatric medicine, and business. With over 60,000 graduates worldwide, the university's alumni now hold positions in diverse sectors, from the House of Representatives to major media companies like Fox and VH1.
