The Florida institution that transformed from a small academy into a historic university
In short: Founded in 1883 as DeLand Academy, Stetson University holds the distinction of being Florida's oldest private college. From its origins in a small town to its status as a nationally ranked institution, the university has evolved through significant philanthropy and architectural milestones that define the landscape of central Florida.
The university's history is deeply intertwined with the town of DeLand, Florida. Originally established in 1883 as DeLand Academy by the town's principal founder, Henry Addison DeLand, the institution was incorporated as DeLand University in 1887. In 1889, it was renamed to honor John B. Stetson, a hat manufacturer and philanthropist who served as a founding trustee and provided generous financial support.
The campus features significant historical landmarks, including DeLand Hall. Opened in 1884 for an original cost of $4,000, it is recognized as the oldest building in Florida still in continuous use for higher education. Another notable structure is Elizabeth Hall, which houses Lee Chapel. Built in 1897, the chapel was dedicated to the memory of Ben Stetson, the six-year-old son of John B. Stetson. The chapel features stained glass windows designed by art professor William Sharp and a 1961 Beckerath Organ containing 2,548 pipes.
Stetson's academic footprint includes the College of Arts and Sciences, the School of Business Administration, the School of Music, and the College of Law. While the main campus is located in DeLand, the university also maintains campuses in Gulfport and Tampa. The university's growth has been supported by major philanthropic efforts, such as a $40,000 contribution from the Carnegie Corporation of New York in 1906, which, matched by Elizabeth S. Stetson, enabled the construction of the Sampson Library.
Today, the university maintains a student-to-faculty ratio of 10:1, with a total full-time faculty of 265. The institution offers a wide array of programs, including more than 55 majors and minors and 18 graduate programs. The student body is diverse, with undergraduates representing 46 states, 57 countries, and one territory.
