Why DC Comics' speedster Bart Allen was destined to die of old age
In short: Bart Allen, the superhero known as Impulse and Kid Flash, possesses a metabolism that ages him at an accelerated rate. This biological quirk meant that even without the intervention of villains, his rapid transition from childhood to adulthood would have claimed his life within months of his initial peak.
Bart Allen, created by Mark Waid and Mike Wieringo, first appeared in 1994. His origin is rooted in the Speed Force, which caused him to age so quickly that he appeared twelve years old while chronologically only two. Raised in a virtual reality designed to match his accelerated perception of time, he eventually entered the 21st century, where his metabolism was stabilized by Wally West. This unconventional upbringing left him with little concept of danger and a tendency toward reckless behavior.
His career as a hero has been marked by constant reinvention and tragedy. After serving as a sidekick to Wally West, Bart took on the mantle of the Flash following West's apparent death during the 2006 Infinite Crisis. However, his tenure was short-lived; he was killed by the Rogues while attempting to stop an unstable machine. It was later revealed by Brainiac 5 that this death was essentially a mercy, as his accelerated aging had reactivated, ensuring he would have perished from natural causes shortly thereafter.
Bart's history is further complicated by the fluid nature of DC continuity. He has been resurrected, erased, and reimagined, most notably as Bar Torr, an amnesiac revolutionary from the future during the New 52 era. Despite these shifts, the original Bart Allen eventually returned to the spotlight in the 2019 Young Justice series. His powers remain distinct among speedsters, including the ability to create Speed Force avatars known as scouts and to manipulate vibrations to generate radio waves, though his primary utility remains his superhuman speed and protective aura.
