Why Meat Loaf finished his iconic trilogy without his longtime songwriting partner Jim Steinman
In short: The final installment of the Bat Out of Hell trilogy arrived in 2006, but it lacked the creative touch of Jim Steinman. A bitter legal battle over trademark rights and conflicting accounts of health issues forced Meat Loaf to complete the project with producer Desmond Child instead of his collaborator.
Released nearly three decades after the original 1977 masterpiece, Bat Out of Hell III: The Monster Is Loose was a contentious conclusion to the series. The project was marred by a high-stakes legal dispute after Steinman, who had registered the Bat Out of Hell trademark in 1995, attempted to block the album's release. Meat Loaf eventually filed a $50 million lawsuit against Steinman and his manager in May 2006, though he later insisted the conflict was purely a business matter involving management rather than a personal falling out between the two friends.
The production process was fundamentally different from its predecessors. With Steinman absent, Meat Loaf recruited Desmond Child to helm the sessions. Child sought to capture the operatic, overblown spirit of the previous albums, even playing Slipknot music to set a heavy tone for the studio musicians. Despite the lack of direct involvement from Steinman, the album incorporated seven of his previously written songs, including tracks originally intended for musical theater projects or earlier solo work. The final agreement allowed Steinman to retain the rights to develop a stage musical based on the trilogy's catalog.
Critical reception was polarized, reflecting the album's status as a patchwork of borrowed and recreated material. While some reviewers praised the vocal performances and the inclusion of guest guitarists like Brian May and Steve Vai, others felt the record lacked the cohesive magic of the earlier collaborations. Commercially, the album saw a brief surge, entering the US Billboard 200 at number 8 and reaching number 3 on the UK Albums Chart, but it struggled to maintain momentum. Ultimately, the record stands as a testament to Meat Loaf's perfectionism and his desire to finalize the trilogy, even at the cost of his most significant creative partnership.
