The Beretta Cheetah: A Half-Century Evolution of Italian Compact Semi-Automatic Pistol Design
In short: Since 1976, the Beretta Cheetah series has defined the compact semi-automatic pistol. From its origins as a reliable sidearm to the modern, optics-ready 80X, this line has evolved through decades of mechanical refinements, including the unique tip-up barrel of the model 86 and various specialized competition and tactical configurations.
The Beretta Cheetah, also known as the 80 Series, debuted in 1976 as a compact, blowback-operated firearm. The series encompasses a wide range of models chambered in .32 ACP, .380 ACP, and .22 LR. While early iterations like the base models featured rounded trigger guards and wood grips, the design underwent significant updates over the decades. The 'B' version, introduced in 1980, added an automatic firing pin safety, while the 'BB' version in 1982 introduced white dot sights and a wider guide rod. By the late 1980s and early 1990s, the 'F' and 'FS' versions brought the 'combat' trigger guard, Bruniton finish, and an improved decocker mechanism to prevent mechanical sticking.
One of the most distinct variants was the model 86, introduced in 1991. Unlike its siblings, it featured a tip-up barrel that hinged at the muzzle, allowing users to load a cartridge directly into the chamber without operating the slide. Though discontinued in 2004 due to low demand, it remains a sought-after collector's item. Other specialized models include the 87 Target, designed for optical sights, and the model 89, built for range training. The series has also seen cross-branding, such as the Browning BDA 380, which Beretta produced from 1977 to 1997.
In 2023, Beretta revived the marque with the 80X, an updated successor to the 84FS. This modern iteration incorporates a Vertec straight-back grip, an optics-ready slide, a Picatinny rail for accessories, and a captive recoil guide rod assembly. The 80X also features the X-Treme S trigger system and is available in various finishes, including bronze and green. By 2025, the platform expanded further with a .32 ACP model and conversion kits, ensuring the Cheetah lineage remains relevant for both modern tactical use and historical appreciation.
